Google Update
One thing I discovered a few days ago was this feature in google maps where you can zoom in on an area and search for places only in that area. So for example, you’re looking for an Italian restaurant that you’ve been to locally but forgot the name, just zoom in on the approximate location and do a search for “Italian”. Voilà! Instant results.
Addendum: You can also use your scroll wheel to instantly zoom in/out of an area. Just hover and scroll.
