Sunday Night Write

Isn’t your mom’s advice always sage? She told me years ago to take a shower whenever I had a long day in order to clear my head. Works like a charm everytime. I think I will change my head gasket my(our)self. I think I will sell my point and shoot camera, even though it’s for a slight loss. Streamlining is always a good thing. Getting rid of the clutter is a good thing.

Two rants about Walmart:

  • Why don’t you sell 100yd Glide floss anymore?
  • Why don’t you sell Citrus flavored Whitening Expressions toothpaste in the liquid gel packaging anymore?

Just a quickie before I get off work…

Can border agents search your laptop. Yes. And at airports too…

Does minimum wage work?

City of Chicago passes a living-wage law.

I don’t see how this can possibly help people who don’t have jobs. Seems like it’ll be an even bigger barrier to getting a job for those who are unemployed.

On Drinking

Learn to appreciate hangovers. If it was all good times every jackass would be doing it.

It’s okay to drink alone.

If you think you might be slurring a little, then you are slurring a lot. If you think you are slurring a lot, then you are not speaking English.

If there is ever any confusion, the fuller beer is yours.

A flask engraved with a personal message is one of the best gifts you can ever give. And make sure there’s something in it. — Thanks Jennifer!

Google Update

One thing I discovered a few days ago was this feature in google maps where you can zoom in on an area and search for places only in that area. So for example, you’re looking for an Italian restaurant that you’ve been to locally but forgot the name, just zoom in on the approximate location and do a search for “Italian”. Voilà! Instant results.

Addendum: You can also use your scroll wheel to instantly zoom in/out of an area. Just hover and scroll.

Wikipedia used in Judicial Ruling

It’s nice to see that even judges will use wikipedia to quickly get up to speed on previously unknown subjects:

This theory appears to conflate two quite different early video games, one called “Breakout” and another called “Asteroids.” Descriptions of the two games in an online encyclopedia reveal no common features beyond their roughly comparable vintage. (See Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakout>; cf. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroids_%28game%29> (as of May 23, 2006).) The author of the theory may have confused Asteroids with Arkanoid, a “clone” of Breakout. (See Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkanoid> (as of May 23, 2006).)

—From the ruling of Apple vs. Jason O Grady (the people who published inside info on Apple products)
