Smoke!

Stupid Kingston memory module fried tonight. The 128MB module was only showing 64MB in the old BX board so I put it in the 815 board to see if I could switch it with the other 64MB module that was already in there.

I start the computer up and wait for the monitor to display the BOOT info. Nothing. Then I smell an acrid smell and immediately turn off the computer. Turns out a pin had shorted and the plastic receptor had melted. The stickers on the Kingston module also melted. Popped it out and inspected the 256MB module that was also in there. Fortunately, that one turns out fine. Stuck the old 64MB back in and turned it on. Acrid smell again. Damn. The 64 is screwed. Pop that out. Should I try it again with just the 256? Am I stupid???!

Yes.

I’m dumb and I try it with just the 256MB module. Luckly for me the computer POST’s and the OS loads.

Damn. I wonder what went wrong. I’m gonna go back to Fry’s to get some money back. Argh. But at least my data still there and I can type this entry in.

That sucks. I put my micro atx motherboard in the mid tower and it worked. I think there’s something shorting the board in the micro atx case.
